Short version: if you want a game that never depends on another player's connection, pick one from the first two groups below. ARC Raiders, Battlefield 6, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Sea of Thieves, Escape from Tarkov, THE FINALS and Hunt: Showdown 1896 run matches on the publisher's servers. Counter-Strike 2, Rust, ARK: Survival Ascended, Conan Exiles Enhanced, Palworld and Dune: Awakening add servers that players can run or rent. Helldivers 2, Elden Ring Nightreign, Deep Rock Galactic, Lethal Company, PEAK, R.E.P.O., Phasmophobia, Baldur's Gate 3, Grounded 2 and Dying Light: The Beast are hosted by one player in the group.

Four server models in plain words

  • Publisher servers. The developer or publisher runs every match on machines in its own data centers or cloud. No player is the host. You cannot run a server yourself.
  • Publisher servers plus community servers. Official servers exist, and the developer also ships server software, so communities can run their own with their own rules, mods and uptime.
  • Self-hosted dedicated servers. The developer publishes a dedicated server program (for most PC games, as a separate free app on Steam). The world lives on a machine that can stay online when every player logs off.
  • Player-hosted (often called peer to peer). One player's game is the server for the session. Strictly speaking, this is a listen server, not a mesh of peers, but the practical effect players complain about is the same: the session depends on the host's machine and connection, and when the host leaves, the session ends or migrates to someone else.

The 2026 list

Platforms are as listed by the developer or publisher. "Self-host" means you can run the server yourself, on your own PC or on a rented machine. For self-hosted games the note gives the Steam app ID of the dedicated server, which is what server tools and hosts install.

Not listed: games whose server model we could not confirm from the developer's own material. Soulframe is an example: it is still in its invite-only Preludes phase, and Digital Extremes has not published how its sessions are hosted in any post we could find, so it stays off the table.

Why the server model matters to players

The difference is not academic. The developers' own patch notes show what goes wrong in each model.

When one player is the host

  • The host leaving can end or stall the session. Elden Ring Nightreign needed a patch for runs that could not progress after the host left. Phasmophobia needed one for lobbies that could not start a game after the host quit. Helldivers 2 migrates the host, and Arrowhead has fixed several crashes that happened during that migration.
  • The host's connection becomes everyone's connection. Ghost Ship says some Deep Rock Galactic glitches happen on the client side and depend on latency with the host. Lethal Company patched lag spikes that hit the host player, whose game runs the session for the whole crew.
  • The host holds the world. In PEAK, players who are not the host do not get the complete world state in their saves. If your regular host stops playing, someone else can host the run from their own save, but the developers warn of "a little weirdness around item spawning".
  • You trust the host. R.E.P.O. had to add protection against hosts forcing cosmetic tokens onto other players. A host's game is authoritative, so a modified host can do things a dedicated server would not allow.

None of this makes player-hosted games bad. For a four-person co-op night with friends, a player host costs nothing and works most of the time. It is a problem with strangers, with uneven connections, and for worlds that are supposed to persist when the host is offline.

When the publisher runs every server

Publisher servers fix the host problems and add one of their own: the game lives only as long as the publisher pays for it. The servers are also a single target. Psyonix wrote in 2024 about DDoS attacks on Rocket League game servers, and Ubisoft has published similar connectivity notes for Rainbow Six Siege. When ARC Raiders has a backend problem, there is no player-run fallback, which is why checking ARC Raiders server status is a regular search.

Even games with official servers trim them. In October 2026 Studio Wildcard began sunsetting a selection of inactive official ARK: Survival Ascended servers, saying official servers exist "as a way for the community to play together without having to host their own". The same studio set August 31, 2026 as the end of official servers for the original ARK on Nintendo Switch. We covered the bigger pattern in why self-hostable servers outlive live-service games.

When players can run the server

Self-hosting gives a group its own rules, its own uptime and a world that keeps existing after the publisher moves on. The cost is responsibility: someone has to pay for the machine and keep the server updated every time the game patches. Our dedicated server updates page tracks when 49 Steam games last pushed a new server build, which shows how often that happens in practice.

How to check any game yourself

You can classify most games in a few minutes, without trusting a forum argument:

  1. Look for a server app on Steam. Search the Steam store or SteamDB for the game's name plus "Dedicated Server". If a separate server app exists, the game supports self-hosting. If there is none, check the developer's own site before concluding anything, since some servers are distributed outside Steam.
  2. Search the patch notes for the word "host". Phrases like "host migration", "the host's end", "non-host players" or "clients vs host" mean one player runs the session. Publisher-run games use "host" only for the owner of a custom lobby, which is a different thing.
  3. Search the patch notes for "game server" and "server crash". A developer fixing crashes on its own game servers is running them. Hunt: Showdown 1896 and THE FINALS both have these entries.
  4. Read what happens when someone leaves. If the game says the session ends or migrates when the host quits, it is player-hosted, whatever the store page says about online play.
  5. Check the date. Models change. Dune: Awakening added self-hosted servers about a year after launch, Palworld added PS5 dedicated servers, and Killing Floor 3 has player-hosted servers on its roadmap.

Changes worth knowing this year

  • Dune: Awakening went from official servers to all three models. Free self-hosted servers went live on PC on May 19, 2026. Funcom's June 2 post set out the terms, and its September 17 relaunch post repeats them: "Up to 40 concurrent players per server, no ongoing fees, you supply the machine." The feature is still marked experimental. Self-hosted servers also unlock settings that official servers keep at default, from sandstorms to PvP zones. Our Dune: Awakening crossplay piece covers the platform side.
  • Battlefield 6 is moving toward a classic server browser. EA's Season 5 notes list persistent Portal server hosting and 100-player Portal servers among the Battlefield Pro perks, and its September 30 community update promises a server browser later in the season. The servers remain EA's; Battlefield Pro buys persistence for them, not a machine of your own.
  • Killing Floor 3 promised player-hosted servers. Tripwire's February 2026 roadmap lists player-hosted servers and a server browser as targeted for later this year. Until then, it runs on official dedicated servers only.
  • PEAK goes multi-platform with crossplay. Announced on October 15, 2026 for the following week, the PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 versions keep the player-hosted model.

FAQ

Which multiplayer games use dedicated servers instead of peer to peer?
Among current games, ARC Raiders, Battlefield 6, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Sea of Thieves, Escape from Tarkov, THE FINALS, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Killing Floor 3 run on publisher servers. Counter-Strike 2, Rust, ARK: Survival Ascended, Conan Exiles Enhanced, Palworld, Dune: Awakening, Valheim, Enshrouded, Satisfactory, Project Zomboid, 7 Days to Die and Don't Starve Together have dedicated servers that players can run.
Which popular games are peer to peer?
Helldivers 2, Elden Ring Nightreign, Deep Rock Galactic, Lethal Company, PEAK, R.E.P.O., Phasmophobia, Baldur's Gate 3, Grounded 2 and Dying Light: The Beast are hosted by one player in the group. Their own patch notes refer to the host, host migration or peer-to-peer latency.
Is peer to peer worse than dedicated servers?
For small co-op groups of friends it usually works and costs nothing. It is worse when the host has a weak connection, when the host leaves mid-session, when you play with strangers who could run a modified game, or when the world should stay online while the host is away.
How can I tell if a game supports self-hosted dedicated servers?
Look for a separate dedicated server app for the game on Steam, then confirm in the developer's documentation or patch notes. If a server app exists, players and hosting companies can run the server.
